Cathedrals of Light and Life

‘England’s cathedrals are not just some of the most magnificent buildings in the world, they are refuges where everyone is welcome to come and meet God in awe, reflection and joy.

This beautifully shot book is a testament to the history and heritage of our buildings, those who have been inspired by them, and the glory of God. I hope all who read it are encouraged to visit and be, in their own way, a part of the cathedral community.’

Archbishop Justin Welby,
April, 2020

INTRODUCTION

Over a period of 9 years I have photographed the 42 cathedrals of the Church of England plus the Cathedral of the Isle of Man, visiting some of the cathedrals multiple times and building a set of over 5,000 images.  Out of these images  some 370 have been selected for publishing in both a hard cover book of 176 pages and an interactive E-Book.  Preparation for publishing is nearing completion.

Over the past few years a number of books on the cathedrals of England have been published.  Most have been very informative historical, cultural and heritage focused publications.  By contrast I have set out primarily to present a vibrant visual account of these amazing centres of Christian worship in the midst of our 21st century world.

The objective is to re-kindle popular interest and awareness of cathedrals, both as centres of worship and creativity, and as reflections of the faithful, dedicated creativity of centuries of artists, architects, and builders.

The digital version (E-Book)

From 5,000 images some 430 have been selected for publishing in an interactive “E-Book”.  An e-book is a publication designed for distribution and reading on electronic media such as tablets, ipads, e-readers and computers.

The Digital version will be published in ePub format. Price £9.49 in the United Kingdom and an equivalent price elsewhere in the world.

Why an e-Book?

Ebooks are increasing in popularity and reach as society becomes increasingly digital.  As technology improves, the visual quality of images on hi-resolution devices such as ipads and computer screens  presents an ideal platform viewing photographs.

Ebooks also enable a high degree of interactivity with readers – internal links enable the reader to navigate easily through the book and ‘buttons’ enable images to be enlarged, pop-up information to be provided and hyper-links to other web sites.  All of these facilities have been used in the Cathedral ebook.

Interactivity in the Cathedral ebook includes the following:

  • A Content page where the cathedrals are in alphabetic order – clicking a cathedral will take you to it.
  • An interactive Map – clicking on the cathedral name on the side or clicking on a cross on the map will take you to the cathedral.
  • At the bottom of each page there is a link to the Contents page and the Map.
  • Passing the cursor over an image with a yellow border will reveal an enlargement.
  • Clicking the title name of a cathedral on a page in the ebook will open the official web site of the cathedral.

Proceeds to support Croydon Episcopal Area Link with the Diocese of Central Zimbabwe

I have prepared the book with the encouragement of Bishop Christopher Chessun, Bishop of Southwark.   The proceeds of the sale of the book, after meeting costs, will go to support the work of the Croydon Diocesan Link with the Central Zimbabwe Diocese – in particular the St Patrick’s Hospital.
